Dynamic goal programming synthetic indicator: an application for water companies sustainability assessment

2018

ABSTRACTThis study proposes to evaluate the sustainability of water companies through time by using a new approach, one that involves a dynamic synthetic indicator derived from goal programming techniques. This dynamic indicator approach incorporates catch-up and innovation indices, which enables one to identify the main factors that drive changes in sustainability through time. We used a case study approach to clarify this dynamic approach by evaluating indicator values from a sample of 129 Portuguese water companies over the 2012 to 2015 time period. For most of the water companies we evaluated, sustainability values changed over time, which illustrates the importance of evaluating dynami…

V I G — A Visual and Dynamic Decision Support System for Multiple Objective Linear Programming

1989

In this paper we describe the principles of VIG (Visual Interactive Goal Programming), a Multiple Criteria Decision Support System, recently developed by Korhonen. PARETO RACE is a corner-stone of this system, which is designed to support both the modelling and solving of a multiple objective linear programming problem. The interface is based on one main menu, spreadsheets, and interactive use of computer graphics. VIG provides the decision-maker with the possibility to approach his/her decision problem by using an “evolutionary approach”. This means that the decision-maker does not have to specify the model precisely prior to solving the problem. In fact, the model evolves progressively. W…

Goal Programming as a Decision Model for Performance-Based Budgeting

2013

Abstract The spreadsheet applications are becoming a widely used tool for processing quantitative data and developing analytical solutions. The ability to build decision support systems (DSS) based on these spreadsheet solutions can facilitate knowledge management and increase information utilization within an organization. The paper describes the use of a spreadsheet solution to partially implement the performance-based budgeting (PB) principles for a public body. The solution builds on the goal programming optimization method and is exemplified for some real data.

Integration of Two Multiobjective Optimization Methods for Nonlinear Problems

2003

In this paper, we bring together two existing methods for solving multiobjective optimization problems described by nonlinear mathematical models and create methods that benefit from both heir strengths. We use the Feasible Goals Method and the NIMBUS method to form new hybrid approaches. The Feasible Goals Method (FGM) is a graphic decision support tool that combines ideas of goal programming and multiobjective methods. It is based on the transformation of numerical information given by mathematical models into a variety of feasible criterion vectors (that is, feasible goals). Visual interactive display of this variety provides information about the problem that helps the decision maker to…

A Multi-Objective Approach to Optimize a Periodic Maintenance Policy

2012

The present paper proposes a multi-objective approach to find out an optimal periodic maintenance policy for a repairable and stochastically deteriorating multi-component system over a finite time horizon. The tackled problem concerns the determination of the system elements to replace at each scheduled and periodical system inspection by ensuring the simultaneous minimization of both the expected total maintenance cost and the expected global system unavailability time. It is assumed that in the case of system elements failure they are instantaneously detected and repaired by means of minimal repair actions in order to rapidly restore the system. A nonlinear integer mathematical programmi…

A Priori Methods

1998

In the case of a priori methods, the decision maker must specify her or his preferences, hopes and opinions before the solution process. The difficulty is that the decision maker does not necessarily know beforehand what it is possible to attain in the problem and how realistic her or his expectations are. The working order in these methods is: 1) decision maker, 2) analyst.

A multi-objective approach to solid waste management

2010

The issue addressed in this paper consists in the localization and dimensioning of transfer stations, which constitute a necessary intermediate level in the logistic chain of the solid waste stream, from municipalities to the incinerator. Contextually, the determination of the number and type of vehicles involved is carried out in an integrated optimization approach. The model considers both initial investment and operative costs related to transportation and transfer stations. Two conflicting objectives are evaluated, the minimization of total cost and the minimization of environmental impact, measured by pollution. The design of the integrated waste management system is hence approached i…
